Penfolds Grange 2006 750ml

Deep crimson. Intensely fragrant dark berry, praline, liquorice aromas with roasted chestnut notes. Very powerful and concentrated palate with blackberry, dark chocolate flavours, pronounced fine tannins and savoury, ginger oak. Finishes oaky firm but long and sweet. Lovely vinosity, energy and freshness.

Varietal: 100 per cent shiraz
Vineyard/region: Barossa Valley (including signicant contributions from Kalimna and Koonunga Hill Vineyard), Magill Estate.
Vintage report: Good winter and spring rainfalls were followed by mild warm conditions over summer and a warm burst of weather accelerated ripening. While it rained intermittently during vintage, the overall quality of the fruit was excellent.

What's the word on the 2006 Penfold's Grange?

Penfold’s Grange 2006 is a highly acclaimed wine from Australia’s famous winery, Penfold’s. This wine is made from a blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, and is known for its deep, rich flavour profile and excellent aging potential. The 2006 vintage received rave reviews from critics, with many noting its full-bodied, complex flavours of dark fruit, chocolate, and spices, along with a strong tannic structure that provides a long, smooth finish. The wine is well-balanced and harmonious, with a good acidity that supports its fruitiness. The wine is still drinking well, but it is at its peak, so it is best enjoyed now before it fades. Overall, Penfold’s Grange 2006 is a must-try for any serious wine enthusiast.

A Good Year
Penfold’s Grange 2006 is considered one of the best recent vintages of this iconic wine, known for its ability to age gracefully and develop complex and nuanced flavours over time. The 2006 vintage was characterized by a warm and dry growing season, which led to perfectly ripe grapes with good concentration of flavours.

A Complex Drop
The wine is made from a blend of 85% Shiraz and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, which are carefully selected from the best vineyards in South Australia. The grapes are fermented in small open fermenters and then aged for 18 months in new American oak hogsheads. The wine is bottled without filtration, which preserves its full flavour and complexity.

The resulting wine is a deep, dark purple colour with a nose of black fruits, cassis, chocolate, and spices. The palate is full-bodied and rich, with flavours of blackberry, plum, and dark chocolate, complemented by notes of vanilla, coffee, and tobacco from the oak aging. The tannins are firm and well-structured, providing a long, smooth finish that lingers on the palate.

It’s Time to Drink it
Penfold’s Grange 2006 is a wine that can be cellared for many years and will continue to evolve and develop new flavours. However, it is now at its peak and should be consumed in the next few years to fully appreciate its complexity and harmony. It pairs well with hearty meat dishes, such as grilled steak or lamb, and strong cheeses.

Overall, Penfold’s Grange 2006 is a wine of exceptional quality and complexity that showcases the best of Australian winemaking. It is a must-try for any wine lover looking for a special and memorable experience.
