First produced in 1959, Bin 28 is Penfolds earliest Bin-range wine, a complex and approachable shiraz.
On the nose sweet and savoury notes compete for attention. A concoction of umami notes: roast meat pan-scrapings, dark soy sauce, soppressa salami, char sui pork and five spiced quail. Dried herbs: rosemary/oregano. Ripe plumbs and blackberries to the fore. Notes of potpourri and violets provide lift. Black tea, ground allspice and toasted ajwain seeds provide spice allure.
On the palate there is lovely mocha, chocolate, espresso flavours. Black jellybean, liquorice, chocolate truffles and rum & raisin. Black forest cake, strudel, crème anglaise. Toasted fennel seeds and fresh tarragon. The acidity is juicy and energetic, while structural graphite-like tannins hold the package together.
