HALLIDAY WINE COMPANION 2022

St Hugo Signature Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

95 Points – Outstanding ‘Every vintage of our iconic Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon has been awarded Gold since 1980, and this year was no exception. With its 18 months in French Oak, and notes of blueberries and cocoa, it is easy to see why this wine has been described as ‘a quintessential St Hugo of might and poise’. – Tyson Stelzer

St Hugo Signature Collection Cabernet Shiraz 2018

95 Points – Outstanding ’60/40% cabernet sauvignon/shiraz. 58/42% Coonawarra/Barossa Valley. Matured 18 months in (58% new) oak barrels (French, American and a little Hungarian). Barossa shiraz serves to both build and tone Coonawarra cabernet, united seamlessly in a tightly coiled structure of great promise. Crunchy, focused, compact black fruits are intricately supported by a multicultural mix of oak, laying out a long finish of high-cocoa dark chocolate and coffee bean. A cellaring special.’ – Tyson Stelzer

St Hugo Signature Collection Barossa Shiraz 2018

95 Points – Outstanding ‘Matured 18 months in (55% new) 90/10% French/American oak barrels. An impressive vintage for St Hugo, leading out with a full, vibrant purple hue. A deep, compact yet bright core of crunchy blackberries, black cherries and satsuma plum hails a great vintage in the Barossa. High-cocoa dark chocolate French oak has been strategically and expertly deployed for long-term endurance. Impressive promise.’ – Tyson Stelzer

St Hugo Signature Collection Barossa Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2019

90 Points ‘72% grenache (70–90yo vines), 22% shiraz (majority 98yo vines), 6% mataro. Partial whole-bunch fermentation for shiraz and grenache; partial extended post-ferment maceration of grenache for 60 days in an oak vat. Matured 8 months in 100% old French oak hogsheads and puncheons. Vibrant, medium purple hue. A seamlessly assembled blend in which the dark fruits and spice of old-vine grenache assume a confident lead, albeit without the lift or definition of the great seasons. Finely textured tannins direct a finish of medium persistence.’ – Tyson Stelzer
